About GT Stewart
GT Stewart is highly regarded, multi-office law firm recognised by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. We are committed to providing access to justice and delivering high-quality legal services to individuals who need them most.
About the Role
We are looking for a motivated and empathetic Paralegal to join our Civil Liberties team, supporting solicitors with a varied caseload involving actions against the police, public authorities and prisons, human rights claims and inquests.
This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful legal work, supporting individuals and families seeking accountability and justice. You will assist with case preparation, legal research, client liaison and the day-to-day progression of matters.
Previous experience in civil liberties, human rights or public authority claims would be helpful, but is not essential. We can provide training to develop your knowledge and skills. We are particularly interested in candidates with a genuine interest in this area of law and a commitment to access to justice.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting with drafting legal documents, including Legal Aid applications, letters of claim, complaints, letters of instruction, witness statements and attendance notes
Supporting solicitors with case preparation, progression and the review of legal documents and evidence
Reviewing and organising medical records and other relevant documentation
Conducting legal research and assisting with the preparation of court documents and correspondence for approval by the Supervising Solicitor
Liaising with clients, counsel, defendants and other relevant contacts in a professional, sensitive and empathetic manner
Taking notes during meetings and preparing files and documentation for meetings and court hearings
Providing general case administration and organisational support to the team
Working closely with the supervising solicitor and colleagues to ensure matters are progressed accurately and efficiently
About You
We are looking for someone who is organised, proactive and detailed-oriented, with a genuine interest in civil liberties, human rights and inquests.
You will ideally have:
A good academic background, preferably with a relevant legal qualification or degree
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to organise information accurately
The ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and take initiative
A collaborative approach, with the confidence to work independently when required
An empathetic and professional manner, particularly when dealing with vulnerable clients and sensitive matters
The ability to follow firm policies, procedures and professional standards
Experience in a legal assistant or paralegal role, and knowledge of Legal Aid or the Civil Procedure Rules, would be advantageous but are not essential. We are happy to provide training, so we welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate the right skills, attitude and enthusiasm for this area of law.
