GT Stewart today secured the acquittal of our client charged with criminal damage following the toppling of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol.
Edward Colston was a slave trader involved in the enslavement of over 84,000 black men, women and children.
Our client was one of four defendants facing trial following the protest on 7 June 2020 which concluded with the pulling down of the statue before it was dumped into Bristol Harbour.
After hearing ten days of evidence, the jury acquitted all four defendants.
This case demonstrates a fundamental element of our criminal justice system: trial by jury.
Our client was represented by Elena Papamichael and Kevin Williams at our City of London office, and at trial by Tom Wainwright of Garden Court Chambers.
