Our client, the mother of JW, brought a civil claim following the tragic death of her son in his prison cell in July 2020 due to drug use. At the conclusion of the inquest in January 2023, the jury found that JW’s habitual drug use, which was known and documented by the prison, may have caused or contributed to his death. The jury also identified safeguarding failures as possible factors.
Our client was ineligible to apply for probate and could not bring a claim on behalf of the estate. However, she accepted a settlement of £10,000 for her personal Human Rights Act 1998 claim as a bereaved family member.
Our client was represented by solicitor, Keiu Kikas with support from Trainee Solicitor, Natalie Acheampong-Sarpong who assisted in drafting the revised letter of claim to the Defendant, and played a key role in the settlement negotiations, ultimately leading to the agreement to settle.
