Phil Mahoney joined GT Stewart Solicitors & Advocates in 2016 after practising for many years in the south of England.  He is a Higher Rights Advocate and Duty Solicitor with over 20 years experience in criminal defence work.  He has represented clients in cases ranging from motoring offences to murder, in the Magistrates, Crown Court and the Court of Appeal.  He brings with him a philosophy of careful preparation and thorough advocacy to every case.

A diligent and thoughtful advocate with a detailed knowledge of the law, he has dedicated almost his entire working life to legally aided criminal defence work, with particular experience in representing clients accused of serious violence or drug offences and clients with psychiatric and psychological challenges.

He acts as a mentor for newly qualified solicitors, solicitor advocates and trainee solicitors who want to specialise in representing clients in the Crown Court as advocates.

Recent Cases

R v I

Acted as Junior Counsel for a client at Leeds Crown Court charged with murder and sexual assault by penetration, a defendant with significant psychological issues.

R v W

Represented a youth accused of participating in an unprovoked group attack with knives and a bottle.  Youth acquitted after trial at Bradford Youth Court.

R v C

Client charged with S18 (Wounding with intent) on a fellow inmate whilst in prison at Sheffield Crown Court.

R v G

Represented a client charged with affray, battery and possession of an offensive weapon including a successful appeal to the Court of Appeal to remove a condition in a restraining order which prohibited the client from visiting his child.

R v H

Represented youth, charged with S.18 (Wounding with intent) with pronounced learning difficulties accused of a serious stabbing.

R v W

Junior Counsel representing a client charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm at Sheffield Crown Court.  Client acquitted after trial.

R v K

Represented a youth charged with an offence of Conspiracy to Rob, which involved him in participation of a series of group-action robberies against multiple victims, some involving the use of weapons.  The client received a non-custodial sentence.
