Job Title: Legal Help Billing Assistant
Location: Remote
Reporting To: Head of Civil Billing
Role Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Billing Assistant with experience in a legal aid environment to join our civil billing team. You will be responsible for preparing and processing legal help claims, ensuring compliance with funding regulations, and contributing to the firm’s billing efficiency. While specific legal help billing experience is desirable, we are open to applicants with demonstrable experience in a legal aid setting and a willingness to learn the specifics of legal help billing. Full training will be provided on internal systems and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Help Claim Approval & Compliance
- Prepare legal help claims across various areas of law (e.g., housing, AAP, family).
- Check ledger rates, funding evidence, and documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Reduce rejections, appeals, and lost costs through careful review.
- Billing & File Management
- Monitor and action dormant file reports to ensure timely billing.
- Submit EC claims within required timeframes.
- Work closely with the Head of Civil Billing to optimise billing practices.
- Collaborate with the wider civil team to meet departmental billing targets.
- Compliance & Audit Preparation
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legal aid billing regulations, including:
- Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012
- Standard Civil Contract and Specification
- Costs Assessment Guidance (2018/2024)
- Support audit preparation and the firm’s responses to LAA queries.
Required Experience & Skills:
- Experience working within a legal aid environment is essential.
- Prior exposure to legal aid billing processes (including EC claims) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Legal Aid Agency requirements and relevant funding rules.
- Some awareness of audit processes would be advantageous.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
