- The Civil Liberties team recently represented a client in a claim against Serco Group Plc after he was unlawfully detained in prison for three additional days. - The Civil Liberties team acted for a vulnerable client who was unlawfully detained in prison for an additional 10 months after he should have been released. The unlawful detention occurred due to confusion over his sentence calculation. GT Stewart sent a pre-action letter to the prison service and obtained £22,500 in damages for our client.
- The Civil Liberties team represented a client who was unlawfully detained and assaulted by police officers outside his home address before being arrested and prosecuted. The charges against our client were dismissed, and the Civil Liberties team made a complaint to the Metropolitan Police Service about the conduct of the officers involved. The complaint resulted in a misconduct meeting, where misconduct was admitted by the officers involved. We subsequently brought a civil claim against the police and our client obtained damages of £3,500.
- The Civil Liberties team recently represented a client who was stopped by officers of the Metropolitan Police Service whilst roller-blading outside his house. He was unlawfully detained for the purported purpose of a drugs search and was assaulted by the officers. He was then arrested for obstructing and assaulting constables in the execution of their duty. He was represented by GT Stewart in the criminal proceedings. It was found at trial that he had no case to answer. Our team made a complaint to the police on his behalf and subsequently brought a civil claim against the force. Despite the Metropolitan Police Service’s decision not to uphold the complaint, the claim settled shortly before trial and our client received £13,500 in compensation.
